Bad Food: Game of Scones by Eric Luper, illustrated by Joe Whale

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this children's book.

The premise starts out simple enough: everything in Belching Walrus Elementary school is alive. Got that? The food in the pantry: alive. The office supplies in the school office: alive. Even the books in the library: all alive.

One extremely hot day, the office supplies can take no more and demand access to the cooler to cool down. Led by the maniacal despot Baron von Lineal (a ruler: pun, I suspect, intended), they shelter in the cooler but end up causing total havoc. Well, the cooler and pantry foods are apoplectic with rage. How dare these office supplies cause such chaos? A brave band of heroes, including a pizza slice and an old hot dog, set out on a mission to take back their pantry and, ultimately, restore balance and calmness across the school. But now the office supplies have tasted such cool pleasures, it doesn't look like they're going to give them up so easily...

This is a great story for children who are developing their love of reading into the area of chapter books. What elevates it above so many other stories is its pure inventiveness and its quirky humour. The artwork throughout is incredible and really brings the story to life.

Five stars!
